"when westerners socialize, they drink; in place of that hongkongers eat."
- my copy of lonely planet, on the chasm that separates oriental from occidental.
so we headed to a british bar in lan kwai fong after work today for yet another yale party. (turns out there were a couple of wellesley girls too, an even one from SMU.) you know, the usual, grab a drink, talk to whoever you see, find someone interesting, talk a bit more, get bored, scan the crowd, excuse yourself etc.
years ago, i feared the nightlife.
but that's the problem. it's such a broad brush. what's the difference between a swing party and a cocktail mixer? does beer contain grain alcohol? is it true that some drugs are not addictive? does it matter?
it's easy to run away. but the folks at lonely planet know something or two about anthropology.
after all, people are people people.
